The Music Within
Kate Sullivan is a singer, composer and arranger. She draws on a vast repertoire that runs the gamut from opera to vaudeville, from motets to jazz. She has produced, written and arranged several CD's including Christmas Classics with The Beane Family, Nine Lives, Lettres de Paris and Sullivan Sings Weill.
Ms. Sullivan has also created two one-woman productions in the Boston area. “LENYA: The Love of Kurt Weill” celebrates the life and music of German/American composer Kurt Weill, as seen through the eyes of his wife Lotte Lenya. “PIAF: The Little Sparrow” is a revealing portrait of the beloved French singer Edith Piaf.
Her works include musical settings for a variety of poets, from Robert Frost and former poet laureate Stanley Kunitz to a musical setting for chorus and chamber orchestra of a medieval Irish poem, Sweeney Astray. Her “Fugitum est”, for strings was a finalist in the Kremlin Chamber Orchestra’s Mozart Competition and was premiered by the orchestra at Carnegie Hall. The “Moon in the Well”, a retelling of a Chinese folktale, for two xylophones, oboe, violin and cello, won honorable mention in the Medaglia d’Oro Competition in the city of Vittorio Veneto. She has also written lyrics to French Jazz composer Claude Bolling’s Suite For Jazz Piano and Flute. Her setting of Carlo Collodi’s beloved tale, Pinocchio, for narrator, string quartet, hammer, chisel and musical saw has been performed many times by The Providence String Quartet.
